When it comes to iconic football boots, kits and training wear - Nike know how to deliver. The first Mercurial Vapor arrived 20 years ago, gracing the feet of a young Ronaldo (the Brazilian one) as he lit up the 1998 World Cup in France. His fast, explosive style of play required a boot that was lighter, yet incredibly durable - and so the ‘Mercurial’ was born. Fast forward 2 years to 2000 and the first Mercurial Vapor arrived, an eye-catching, unrelenting gold in colour, it weighed just 230 grams - even less than the original Mercurial. For the next 18 years, Nike would repeat this formula, engineering boots that grew lighter and fit tighter each time. To quote the American sportswear giants themselves: “The best boots are the ones you forget are there.” By the time the Superfly IV arrived in 2014, Nike’s boots were feather-like. The Mercurial Superfly IV also introduced the first Flyknit construction, as well as the very first Dynamic Fit collar - a move that would herald a new trend among football boots. Worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Alexis Sanchez, Eden Hazard and Kylian Mbappe among others, Nike Mercurial boots continue to be worn by the fastest, most exciting forwards to this day.
